Hal McIntyre and His Orchestra - Free and Easy - CD $9.95
After his tenure with the original Glenn Miller Orchestra, alto saxophonist Hal McIntire started his own big band with ex-boss Miller's blessing. While he may have been motivated by Miller's success, the McIntire band's approach was considerably more jazz-oriented, inspired by the swinging, creamy elegance of Duke Ellington. Further, McIntire employed like-minded musicians who could evoke the unique aspects of the Duke's soloists. This 1958 live set (recorded in Portland, Oregon) demonstrates that McIntire's outfit was one of the more underrated of the Swing Era.
